If you could have just one credit card, which one would you choose and why? I'm not just talking about VISA, AMEX, etc... I would also like to know from where (a bank? store? Other?)

My card of choice is from the bank that also has my checking/savings account. It's easier to negotiate when you have the leverage, no matter how slight, of taking your business elsewhere.

I don't get your question, if you are paying it off in full it doesn't matter which card you use.

However you can only use AmEx at costco.. so AmEx.

Some stores you only get extra coupons with using their card, Macys, Kohl's etc.

As long as it's one of the major ones, doesn't really matter. I'd look at a shopping club like Costco, Sams, BJ's, etc. They often have great rates, and even free monetary exchange for traveling out of the country. I'd also recommend keeping 2 credit cards. We have 2 because on vacation many years ago, my wife lost one. We had the other CC to get us back home. Otherwise, it would have be very hard to get back home... can't rent a car or get a hotel room with cash.

We use our bank card which gives up points that can be used for items, trips, ect. So far we have I think around 8,000 points. With Christmas coming we may use some but not all, as we do cash to all. It's a once size fits all..and the color suits everyone. Simway

Personally, I would go with VISA or MasterCard which is connected with your check/saving/brokerage account; it's just cleaner that way since I pay the balance off monthly, always. If you're going to carry a balance go with with the lowest interest you can find.

For some people it does matter. From the posts so far there seems to be.

AMEX is great for the consumer (points and rewards) but not for the business. Their fees are high. The place I work at doesn't take it anymore.

Macy's. What seems great about Macys are the rewards. They have had great sales lately and using the card saves you even more. It's also a VISA right? So you can use it elsewhere as well.

I have seen customers use Amazon.com VISA cards, cards that give a certain percentage to charity, etc.

Just wondering what people prefer and why. It's interesting to see the reasons too.

From a budgeting point of view I meant that it did not matter. I did not realize you were looking at rewards cards.

I think the card that Macys wants you to sign up for is just a charge card you can only use in their store.

They might have an actual macy's visa, but I am not sure. Most stores just issue store credit cards, with the exception of Sears.

Sears switched to a visa card that you can use anywhere but their credit department is owned by Citibank.

Yup, there is a Macy's VISA. We have had customers who use it. We also get Nordstroms VISA.

If I had to choose only one card, it would definately be my AMEX. The cash back rewards program is great and they have some great benefits on travel, car rental and luggage insurance. You also get regular discounts on other things. They are also the best company to work with when it comes to disputing charges - particularly online charges.

I do like to carry my discover card too though because AMEX does have high rates for business owners. I'm pretty sure the Discover card has 0 charges for businesses, so I like to use that at mom and pop places.

I agree. If you have an AMEX it's also good to have another like a VISA in which you would use if you can't use the AMEX.

Maybe it's a good thing though to just have AMEX. More control over spending? Ha.

To answer your question: Visa

for the past 5+ years now, my one and only "card" has been a VISA debit card.

Absolutely no problems with it whatsover.....

I'm just curious...would doing "credit" on a debit card be as effective as a regular credit card when it comes to building a good credit history? I would think not since it still automatically takes it out of your checking...just day or two later from the time of purchase.

Ah ok. That's what I thought.

Right now, hubby and I don't have a credit card. Our goal is to not use it too often, just for major purchases and to pay the entire balance. At the same time it would be nice to have one with decent rewards. I guess it depends on our goal. Where do we shop or plan to shop more at? Do we want mileage? Cash back? To support a cause? It's hard to decide. lol

Just go to your bank and get a regular visa. You have to spend thousands on rewards cards to get a lousy 10.00 gift card. It isn't worth it unless you spend a lot of money and pay the bill in full each month.

I do have a debit card with points though through Chase.

Actually there are a few websites that compare credit cards. Cardweb.com is one.

You can listen to dave ramsey all you want, but the fact is the FICO is used to determine insurance rates and for employment offers and to be able to rent a house or apartment.

She just got married and would probably like to buy a house someday. Its wise to start planning now.

It is smart to try to protect it and it does not mean you are worshiping at an altar of debt. People with bad credit are going to be hurting until this credit crisis is over by simply paying more or being denied opportunites.

it also getting off topic from the original post.

I suppose as of right now, either a Macy's card or one that supports a charity is on the front burner right now. I would like Sears too since we go to Sears to buy major items (they have great customer service too! At least here.) but I take it that Citi Bank is not good? My friend has a WWF (World Wildlife Federation) card and she likes it. A percentage of her purchases goes to the foundation.

not listening to Dave. just talking from past experience.

I just know that when i did use, and have a CREDIT CARD, the credit card companies would do everything in their power to extract as much money out of me as possible. Change cards? Eventually the same issues would pop up all over again. Whether it's changing due dates/grace periods....or billing/charging me for things I did NOT want (credit protection).....or any number of scams.....

I am protecting my credit....by not letting the credit card companies screw it up again....

my credit rating, by the way, has never been better.....and, I can sleep at night knowing that the credit card companies aren't working on some scheme to cheat me again....I don't have to dread looking at my statement, and comparing them to my previous statement to try and find out what they changed...since they were always so diligent in changing the "rules of the contract" anytime they felt like it.....

it IS wise to start planning now.....have a good job, pay your rent on time (and have that reported to the credit agencies)....and, you're fine. Chances are she's got a car loan, and a few other "credit score" things....along with being wise to know you can live WITHOUT them...

Don't bow down to the altar of credit card companies!

They are NOT a NECESSITY.....

though, thinking about it...if you're convinced that it's a necessity to get a card...here's how I would do it.

1) Get a card issued from your bank that you currently have your other accounts with. Paying your bills as they come in will be easier, and when dealing with the inevitable "disputes" (when your interest rate magically goes from 9.9% to 23% for no reason other than "they felt like it")....you can actually go in and talk to someone IN PERSON, and as someone who is a "customer" with not just a credit card, but MORE accounts, they'll care a bit more about making sure you're issues are taken care of satisfactorily.

2) $1,000 or so limit. DO NOT ALLOW them to automatically raise your "credit limit"....this protects you from allowing them to entice you to "spend" more. They aren't "rewarding" you at all by raising your 'credit limit'....

3) use it sparingly. The fewer purchases you make, the fewer opportunities VISA/MC has to mess around with the terms of use regarding your card, and thus, cheating you....

4) Scrutinize EACH and EVERY statement. FULLY READ every piece of mail you get from the credit card company. It's through those "disclosure statements" that they'll change the terms of your card (in the "super fine print"), and, in effect, cheat you out of more of your money.

5) have ANY and ALL settled disputes IN WRITING (and, trust me, there will be plenty of them)...completely stating the dispute settlement....far too often, when there is a dispute, they'll agree to something on the phone, then the next bill comes, and it's STILL not taken care of...then, the company denies any such "dispute settlement", and you're back to "Square 1", fighting with them....for YOUR money.....

that's all i can think of for now...iam sure there are more.
