I received an email form my mother about this and I'v also seen it on a few FB pages. Is this something that's being encouraged or just an idea being passed around. Do welfare recipients have to take drug tests every so often or not? Should they be require to?

I think that would be a wonderful idea; if they fail the test, send the check to rehab if they will go Then let them try again. It is most upsetting for our tax monies to go towards illegal drugs for the addicts, and booze for the drunks. Thanks RC

Perhaps in some cases similar to garnishment wages to atone for criminal(alimony/Madoff/public corruption) activity the courts can attach public assistance for further infraction.

I think its a stupid idea. Maybe they should conduct obesity tests before giving out welfare checks...... "I compared the TAH’s numbers with the federal government’s statistics on individual Food Stamp participation for each of the ten states. More effort was required to find this information than I would have imagined, until I discovered that the official name of the program, as of October 2008, is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Now it sounds much more like the bureaucratic black hole that it is. Here are the top five obese states, with their percentages of obesity and food stamp participation: * Mississippi – 32.5% of population is obese, 14.8% of pop. participates in SNAP * Alabama – 31.1% obese, 11.9% SNAP * West Virginia – 31.1% obese, 15.3% SNAP * Tennessee – 30.2% obese, 14.5% SNAP * South Carolina – 29.7% obese, 13.0% SNAP * Average of the top five: 30.92% obese, 13.9% SNAP These numbers aren’t particularly striking until you compare them with the least obese states. I have listed them from 46 (Hawaii) to 50 (Colorado). Colorado, again, was the least obese state in the nation. * Hawaii – 21.8% obese, 7.4% SNAP * Rhode Island – 21.7% obese, 8.1% SNAP * Connecticut – 21.3% obese, 6.4% SNAP * Massachusetts – 21.2% obese, 7.7% SNAP * Colorado – 18.9% obese, 5.1% SNAP * Average of the bottom five: 21.0% obese, 6.9% SNAP Again, these statistics are no proof of causality, but there is a definite correlation. The SNAP program, according to the government’s website, is designed to “put food on the table for some 31 million people per month.” Many of these individuals apparently need larger chairs to sit around their tables. One of the reasons behind the government’s name change, the website explains, is to focus more on getting healthy food within reach of its “clients,” an indication that Washington may have an idea that this sort of relationship exists." http://theconstitutionalalamo.com/2009/07/02/government-welfare-encourages-obesity-or-so-it-appears/

I think it's simple: If I can fail a drug test and lose my job, then the same should be true for welfare. Drugs are ILLEGAL...overeating is not.

We had another thread about forming a judgement about seeing goodies and "junk" food in a cart when they were paying with food stamps. That is a different issue and it might be nice if someone could find it and link it. I do think in some respects our welfare system is too easy to get into and in some respects it is needlessly complicated. Drug testing before or during assistance is a good idea but it would become one more messy hoop to jump through for those who honestly need it. It is not fair to them that others would be irresponsible and they'd have to jump through the hoop because others are doing drugs, etc. And then what about the children who would have less to eat because their parent is strung out? It is just not as simple as it first sounds.

Don't they take kids out of the homes when the parents are strung out on drugs?

What defines drugs? you mean illegal drugs....not like zoloft, or prosac, or those psychtropic drugs.... Why dont we get rid of the welfare system altogether? And stop paying taxes? Or is a 'welfare system" actually a christian doctrine? Where those that have are to support those that don't...?

I'm talking about whatever kind of drug abuse that is being discussed in this thread--the kind that they would take away your welfare benefits over. If you are doing illegal drugs, and they find it out, don't they arrest you and take away your kids anyway? They don't just continue to give you food stamps, do they?

You would think so, but not in many cases!!! Children suffer needlessly because of selfish parents that abuse drugs and neglect their children. However, the United States does not have the resources to take all these children away from their parents and place them in loving homes. We are a dysfunctional country with a national debt close to 10 TRILLION dollars. We are in an economic crisis, and no one is hiring. Depression is up, and many single mothers resort to substance abuse to deal with the abuse they've endured. Not many look to Jesus for support, and there are not many services to help these mothers, just to punish them. The system is rotten. Welfare is only part of that dysfunctional system.

Drugs are illegal because they are harmful to the self and society. Isn't obesity? So it is a moot statement to state that there should be no correlation between illegal drugs and obesity because of legality.

Our welfare system encourages people NOT to work. Our welfare system encourages people NOT to be honest. Our welfare system encourages people NOT to be a legal citizen. Our welfare system encourages people NOT to do anything to help themselves, but instead it breeds a sense of entitlement. Back on track with the drug testing topic: IMO, the drug testing should be random...you are notified via registered letter and given a specified time frame to comply not to exceed "X" days or your next month's check will be forfeit.

So it is a moot statement to state that there should be no correlation between illegal drugs and obesity because of legality. Drugs are illegal because of a lifestyle of crime and murder on a grander "dealer" scale. On a smaller scale, drugs lead to abandonment and abuse of chidlren all the time. And next month, these same people gladly pick up their check and buy more...and the cycle continues...I still think testing is a viable option. Again...obesity is NOT illegal, but many do pay for it with higher insurance premiums, pay twice what others pay for airline tickets, etc. etc. so while some people may feel it is proper to compare the two, I do not. One is legal and one is moral.

One is legal and one is moral. Drugs are not illegal because of the lifestyle....the lifestyle is a result of the attention put on the government by attempting to regulate and prohibit. remember prohibition? Organized Crime and Prohibition -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "The reign of tears is over. The slums will soon be a memory. We will turn our prisons into factories and our jails into storehouses and corncribs. Men will walk upright now, women will smile and children will laugh. Hell will be forever for rent." Reverend Billy Sunday delivered this quotation during a speech at the beginning of prohibition. Many people believed and hoped that prohibition would make the above true. However, as they watched and waited, they realized that nothing was improved, and somehow, things had gotten worse. The following are statistics detailing how much worse crime got: Police funding: INCREASED $11.4 Million Arrests for Prohibition Las Violations: INCREASED 102+% Arrests for Drunkenness and Disorderly Conduct: INCREASED 41% Arrests of Drunken Drivers: INCREASED 81% Thefts and Burglaries: INCREASED 9% Homicides, Assault, and Battery: INCREASED 13% Number of Federal Convicts: INCREASED 561% Federal Prison Population: INCREASED 366% Total Federal Expenditures on Penal Institutions: INCREASED 1,000% "Not only did the number of serious crimes increase, but crime became organized. Criminal groups organize around the steady source of income provided by laws against victimless crimes such as consuming alcohol or drugs, gambling and prostitution. In the process of providing goods and services those criminal organizations resort to real crimes in defense of sales territories, brand names, and labor contracts. That is true of extensive crime syndicates (the Mafia) as well as street gangs, a criminal element that first surfaced during prohibition." "The contributing factor to the sudden increase of felonies was the organization of crime, especially in large cities. Because liquor was no longer legally available, the public turned to gangsters who readily took on the bootlegging industry and supplied them with liquor. On account of the industry being so profitable, more gangsters became involved in the money-making business. Crime became so organized because "criminal groups organize around the steady source of income provided by laws against victimless crimes such as consuming alcohol. As a result of the money involved in the bootlegging industry, there was much rival between gangs. The profit motive caused over four hundred gang related murders a year in Chicago alone." Bootleg alcohol is what fueled the work of Organized crime. Most of the men involved in the Mafia or gangs were young immigrants. The business of bootleg alcohol was highly profitable for everyone involved which often fueled the Mafia or gang wars. By the late 1920's more than 1 million gallons of bootleg liquor had been illegally brought into the United States. Most of the alcohol came in either through Canada or from ships that were located just beyond U.S. waters. See Coast Guard Pictures during the Prohibition Era. However, there was alcohol being produced legally in the United States that was also being bootlegged. Most of the alcohol being produced for use in manufacture often ended up being bootlegged. We will look more at bootleg alcohol, speakeasies and other forms of illegal alcohol as we look at life for the average American.
