On my desk top Dell XPS 400, Real Player is constantly popping up for no reason. It seems to happen when I have a flash drive in. This is with any flash drive, including my old 256 mb flash drive, which is in right now. This started happening recently with my SanDisk Cruiser, which seems to have a problem and I cannot use it anymore. I transferred my files onto my external hard drive and have transferred a few of those files onto the flash drive I am using at the moment. These are Microsoft Office files. On the flash drive I have in right now, there are only Microsoft Office files and PDF files. I have no photos, no music, only paperwork type files. What should I do? How can I find what the problem is and why it keeps showing up?

First thing I'd do would be to check to see whether RealPlayer is installed on the system. If it is, then uninstall it (Start -> Run -> appwiz.cpl). If you can't find it on the system, then something else is going on. There are many possibilities. But, one thing at a time. Let us know and we'll go from there.

I think the RealPlayer popping up is just a symptom. My guess is the real problem is a virus. You probably popped in an infected flash drive and got a virus. Run anti-virus scanners and anti-malware scanners to clean up your system. But fore RealPlayer in general, it is very persistent. You can try to shut it off, but it wants to remain on. Uninstall it now and if you find you need it later, install it but make sure you do NOT let it become the default for every file extension on the planet, which it tries to do by default.

I have run various virus scans since this began happening. I am no longer using the flash drive that this started with, but when I used a different flash drive, Real Player popped up again. I haven't used a flash drive since yesterday. I am currently running yet another scan. I bought a new flash drive yesterday to transfer the data onto since I need that data. It has all my daily work on it with lessons plans and schedules for our homeschool. I will talk to my husband about uninstalling Real Player, since that is what I've been wanting to do, but I cannot do it while a scan is running. Thank you.
