2 people i trust spoke highly of the iphone and ipod. i'm considering them but can't get all the information i need. i've looked all over the apple website and just can't get what i need to know. 1. the main question is, does the iphone do the exact same thing as the ipod? meaning, should i get both OR will i waste money because the iphone will do all the ipod does? 2. i'm not a phone person. a phone is for calling and nothing else. i don't text because i have human hands which means buttons on a cell phone are too small. i need a full sized keyboard to type correctly. therefore, i thought i would get an ipod and then get a regular, no frills touch screen cell phone. does this make sense or would my money be better spent just getting the iphone and absolutely nothing else? i'm all about money and spending it wisely. i want the most for the cheapest. 3. with my current mp3, to get music on it, i just plug it into my computer...go to windows player and click and drag and sync to the mp3. i don't have to use the program that came with the mp3 which i found tedious and confusing. can i do that with the ipod or do i have to use the program that came with it? and if so, how tedious is that process? i like the click and drag sync method.

Ipod = mp3 player + music video capability Ipod touch = mp3 + music video capability + app capability (email, wifi, ebooks, etc). Basically a mini handheld computer Iphone = all of the above + phone capability + camera, etc. You don't need both. Pick one or the other. Iphones are good phones but have some major disadvantages..cost, lack of 3g coverage in certain areas, locked down operating system, etc. You are locked into Itunes, however.. even if you maually manage your music you still need Itunes to do any software updates/restores.

You'd spend a lot less having a regular cellphone and an iPod Touch (aka iTouch). The only thing you'd miss is internet access that you'd get through the cell phone service on the iPhone, but by not choosing the iPhone (and/or another smart phone with internet) you'd save a good amount of money each month. The iPod touch will give you wireless internet access through WiFi, at home and at places where you can access free WiFi (in the US, Panera Bread, Barnes and Noble, etc.) So, basically, I'd suggest only choosing the iPhone if you only want one device (traveling, etc.). The interface is very cool, there are many neat apps for the iPhone/iTouch and I personally like the iTunes application, myself.

i'm all about saving money. so at some point i have to figure out the cost of and ipod touch + regular no frills cell phone and compare it to the cost of the iphone + service. i'm kinda leaning towards the first option (ipod + cell phone) cause i think it'll be cheaper. i don't text. and the texts i get are junk mail. i use less than 300 minutes per month. and then there's the data charge for internet use...i have internet service on my computer. although, now that you mention it, one device would be nice. i'll see. thanks for the information. please note: i am open to suggestions. anything to help make the decision easier, i'll take it. also, i'm wondering...would it be better to get it from the apple store (which is about 30 minutes from me) OR order it from amazon (which is $30 cheaper + no tax + no shipping charges). what i'm asking is are there advantages to getting it from the apple store?

the only advantage is you get to walk out with it that day instead of waiting. There's really no advantage price wise.. they'll offer to show you the features.. If you have a costco membership you can get a slightly lower price on the itouch.. plus their extended warranty for 90 days.

my take.... get an ipod classic, and an iphone. Ipod is for music listening. Iphone is for talking and texting. in technical terms.... an iphone, and an ipod touch are teh exact same device... iphone allows phone and texting and camera. but they are both ipods, both play videos, both do apps, both play games. but i prefer the ipod classic. last time i looked, you can get a 160gb ipod classic for less than a 64gb iTouch. tahts what i have. i have an ipod classic for my music. and i have an iphone for my phone/texting/apps. my ipod classic is almost out of room, so i have all my podcasts on my phone :-/ but other than that, i really dont use my phone as an mp3 player. but i only have a 16gb phone, and it doesnt offer enough space anyway for all my music, so i don't even see the point of even going there. all devices you have to use itunes, but i wouldnt have it any other way. i USED to only listen to music on data MP3 cds until i got an ipod, and the continuity, categorization, and organization of Itunes makes me happy. i love how it automatically arranges things in basically every way imaginable. so i can find my music when i want it, how i want it. and its so much faster after everything is tagged and set by itunes, you'll be blown away at how fast you can find everything.

I still don't see the point of having both. The Iphone is great to listen to music on.. also if you want to go for a walk you can listen to either the Ipod part or use Pandora.. or listen to Internet/Satellite radio while using the GPS..You wouldn't want it for a triathlon prob but to just listen to music.. its the same as an Ipod. Thats just my personal preference.. the smartphone in my opinion is to take the place of several different gadgets with one.

I have an iPod, iPhone, and the boys have iTouch. I bought the 80g iPod a couple of years ago and I use that to store ALL of my media; music, books, videos, movies...you name it. I use my iPhone for talking, texting, apps, and listening to music. The biggest advantage of my iPhone over my iPod is I can listen to music without using ear buds or a plug in speaker. In fact right now I have my iPhone playing music for everyone in the office and it sounds great. I will probably never get anything other than an iPhone in the future. It's a great phone and I can do just about anything with it.

i did the calculations. ipod touch + a regular cell phone are the best value. what killed the iphone for me was the $30 data charge. i have no need for it since i don't text. and outside of the phone, the ipod touch can do everything the iphone can.

ORIGINAL: Miss Giggles I still don't see the point of having both. The Iphone is great to listen to music on.. *scoffs* please... the iphone is only 32 gb... thats laughable! i can hide 32 gb of music where the son don't shine. i need something with some massive space. i'm waiting for the 1 tB ipod :) then we'll be talking. i currently have less than 1 gb left on my ipod and its 80 gb. that puny iphone wouldnt do me any good as an mp3 player.

I have about 50 GB of music in my repository. But at any time, I only have about 4 GB on my Blackberry Storm, which I listen to music on. While the thought of carrying around 500 GB of music in a portable device sounds tempting... finding something to listen to among tens of thousands sounds like frustration. I will from time to time change the load on my phone so that it is different. But I pull it from my 50 GB of music on my hard drive. Oh, and with my BB on Linux, I just plug in the USB cable and drag and drop to it like it was a regular flash drive. I like simple.

I have an 80 gb iPod classic, and inherited my older daughter's 1st gen iTouch (8 gb) when she allowed it to take a ride in the washer and thought it was dead. If you just want to play music, podcasts, audiobooks, and the occasional watching video on a very small screen (like waiting in the doctor's office), then the Classic is a good choice. If you want to play games and use apps, in addition to the above, then the iTouch is a better choice, even with less storage. And if you don't think you want to play games and use apps, you might want to do some research about the apps that are available, just to be sure.

I have all of them and miss my itouch because of the storage. I've had to reduce so much on my iphone for listening. I have about 30 gigs of music but of course don't listen to it all. I would like three times more than I have on my iphone though.

One word describes the Ipod Touch...AWESOME. I use mine for reading e-books primarily, but it has so many great little apps that it is pretty much always with me. Our power went out the other night and we were in complete darkness, I just whipped out the old Ipod Touch, hit the flashlight app, and bam, we had light. I think for the price it is an amazing device.
