I do brown rice in my microwave in a bowl 2x as large as the finished rice. 1 cup rice: 1 1/2 cups water & seasoning to taste; 5 min on 100% power; 45 min on 50% power. It turns out perfect every time.

There MUST be someone around who has cooked brown rice in a rice cooker! The first time I tried that short-grain brown rice was from my friend's slow-cooker. I'll have to ask her how she does it.

Apparently, Chem Dude doesn't know how to cook brown rice in a rice cooker, either. But thanks for the alternative cooking methods, everyone!

I spoke with an Italian woman recently about whole wheat pasta -- I asked her how she felt about it. She said, and I quote: "Oh no. You have to create the dish around the whole wheat pasta -- it has that different texture and flavor, and it RUINS the traditional dishes. You cannot use whole wheat fettucine with Alfredo Sauce." Brown rice probably needs the same "respectful" treatment from those of us who are purists.

I can no longer stand regular pasta. It's too gummy and flavorless. I also love not having the crazy blood sugar swings after eating it. I do make fettuccine alfredo and other pasta dishes and now prefer the whole wheat pasta.

I'm committed to eating healthier. But for me, I'll create new dishes with it. I'm looking forward to it, and thank you for starting this thread. Alton Brown has a rice salad recipe with the short grain brown rice. That will be the first thing I'll try, and it will go with the flavor and texture. This will be fun, and I'll report back in about a week.

We bought actual free range organic (frozen) BLSL chicken breast from Sprouts (health food store) for the first time ever since it was on sale and the same cost as what we usually get. The taste and texture were SO much better than what I'm used to- I was really amazed. Keep in mind, the chicken we usually buy is not junk chicken. Its the Sprouts store brand- no hormones/enhancers/solutions, minimally processed, hand trimmed, never frozen. I wish we had been able to buy more of it when it was on sale, but it was the end of the month and we were at the end of our grocery budget. When we went back today they didn't even have it anymore.

I definately agree that whole wheat pasta has a heartier flavor and overpowers some sauces.

We've found the same thing. I am not cooking with near as much sauce/marinades as I was before, because the meat doesn't need to be enhanced so much when it's quality meat. The older I get and the more I experiences I have, quality is becoming my watchword in all areas of life. Quality food items are more expensive, but you buy less of them, they last longer, cook up quickly (except for brown rice ,) and are better for you. For the last three Thanksgiving's we've had a fresh, organic, free range, Kosher/ brined turkey from Whole Foods. They are pricey (ours was about $85), but you haven't lived until you've had one, and there is absolutely no waste. We eat every morsel. So worth it, imho.

We splurged on some all-natural chicken breasts Saturday night, and the difference was remarkable. I'm not sure how to describe it, aside from it was flat-out better. Plumper, juicier, tasted better...I hadn't expected such a noticeable difference.

I'm glad it wasn't just us. The difference was between hormone/additive free all natural and certified free range organic. It was like the organic just had a better texture and flavor to it.

Around here I can get all natural bison and it's soooo much better than ordinary off-the-shelf beef (which I rarely buy anymore). My family loves it. It's also much higher in nutrients and doesn't acidify your system as much as beef does.

The texture of the meat is different when it's shot up with all of those "natural" enhancers.

Tonight we will have spaghetti w/ bison meat sauce and Thursday we will have ground bison patties smothered in onions and a whole-wheat-flour-thickened gravy. Yummy!!

Even the ground bison tastes like a good steak. It makes a GREAT meatloaf with peppers and onions and free range organic eggs and organic oatmeal. That has become one of my family's favorite meals. Who woulda thunk....

Hey there, StephK & Everybody, I finally tried the short grain brown rice. No, I didn't get a chance to cook any, but I went to PF Chang's tonight and had theirs. I would eat this rice again with Chinese food, most definitely. And I agree with Alton Brown that it would make an awesome salad.
