I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2006.

I was experiencing constant bloating and welling which was not only making me puffy and tight-feeling, but exacerbated my asthma.

I was also having acne that I could not control. I'd never had problems with my skin.

I had a period that lasted 4 weeks and since I started having periods at the age of 9 had disabling pain. There were many times I would actually have to hide somewhere and just close my eyes to be able to survive. I knew it was bad.

I also couldn't lose ANY weight whatsoever, even dieting and exercising.

Probably worst of all, I was having incredibly dramatic mood swings, almost to like a bi-polar level.

The doctor was pretty sure I was insulin resistant and put me on the diabetic diet, but my blood tests came back perfectly and I was FAR from being diabetic. In fact, I was almost the opposite.

I started taking metformin and Yaz and while I lost about 20 lbs of water in the next two weeks, I also began having incredible nausea that lasted about a year.

I saw a different OB/GYN who asked me why I was on metformin in the 1st place and I told her that the doctor previous put me on it. My new doc said she saw no reason to treat me for a condition I don't have, being diabetes, and that metformin is often used too haphazardly.

I stopped taking it and the nausea stopped, but I've had difficulty losing weight from the initial 30 pounds. I'm sure if I started taking it again it would help, but my nausea was absolutely unbearable and disabled me about as much as the pain from the periods did.

Have you tried a controlled carb diet like Atkins, South Beach, Carbohydrate Addicts, low GI or something similar?

I know a lot of people who have been able to reverse symptoms of PCOS on those kinds of diets and using supplements. The diabetic diet still has too many carbs and can trigger more hypoglycemic type reactions.

I know for me after the initial rounds of strict low carbing it seemed to correct the major symptoms and I was able to gradually up the non refined carbs quite a bit without triggering the symptoms. As soon as I get careless though with the refined carbs my symptoms come back with a vengeance.

Has anyone had the ovarian drilling for PCOS? I am having a laproscopic surgery done for endometriosis, and while they are in there they are going to go ahead and drill my ovaries. I am a little nervous about this and would like feedback if anyone has any. Thanks!

I've not had that, and I've never even heard of it! Why is this necessary? Is it because of a build up of ovarian cysts? I've never had an ovarian cyst, not all women with PCOS have them...what is the drilling supposed to fix/cure?

Blessings,
Kim

I'm a Cyster without the cysts ... so no, I've never done it. I think there are some folks on soulcysters who have.

Heather ... GRRRRRR! If there is one thing I can't stand, it's doctors who give conflicting advice, and doctors who assume you're being treated for diabetes just because you're on met!

But I am not downplaying the digestive side effects of that medicine, not at all. There is just more than one way to skin a cat, and more than one way to treat what's going on with you.

I recommend that you see an endocrinologist. Do some serious RESEARCH on the web (I cannot reccomend soulcysters highly enough!) and insist on certain tests to be done by your doctor.

Low carbing is an excellent dietary routine ... I know lots of cysters who have had luck with the Insulin Resistance Diet, South Beach and the core plan of Weight Watchers, all of which emphasize balance.

I used to think my digestive side effects were due to the Met. My doc prescribed a cholesterol pill, Whel-chol, that had the added side effect of causing constipation.

Then I went off of them for a while. Guess what? My digestive system didn't change much.

When I went back on, my doc gave me a new cholesterol med that had the added bonus of NOT causing any side effects. The digestive effects of met were pretty nasty ... but only for a week or so. After a while, I was back to my wacky self. I found out that IBS has very little to do with my meds, and more to do with my hormones, which Met helps keep in check.

Oh, and my bloodwork didn't flag me as diabetic either. Some day I'll have to post the numbers. It did show me as insulin resistant, however. And almost hypoglycemic! My blood sugar was in the low 70s or high 60s by the 5th hour of the test!

The diabetic diet is VERY BAD for those of us with PCOS! It is FAR too heavy in carbs, too low in protein!

Ugh..I am on day 5 of Metformin and it is giving me a tummy ache! The doctor said that it should ease up after my body got used to it but it kept me up last! Of course part of that could have been the KFC I had too, it always makes me a little sick, but not this bad.

The side effects of Met are always worse with greasy or sugary foods.

I haven't ever had it done but I know several woman who got pregnant a few months after having it done!! I talked to my Endo about it a couple times and we decided that it could potentially be an option for me, but in the end it didn't need to be done.

Erin, the yucky symptoms of Met will pretty much go away if you eat low-carb. My mom had trouble with it until she went on Atkins and whadda ya know, the nausea was totally gone. Works great for losing weight.

Well... I was hoping I would be one of those woman whose PCOS symptoms get *better* after pregnancy but it seems mine have become worse. It could just be wonky hormones from having a baby but I don't think it is I have baby sized cystic acne and more "stray eyebrows" on my chin; enough that I need to just have the whole thing waxed.

The Metformin side effects have pretty much gone away. I think the other night I had a mild food poisoning case too, hubby was also feeling sick, just not as bad as I.

Yeah...I'm doing that too. Its hard, I'm a carb-aholic. I could live off nothing but bread, pasta, and rice. I'm trying to do better.

I feel ya on the carbs! I quit doing as much low-carb eating while I was pregnant and it's been a real bugger to get back to it... I need to dig out my old LC cookbooks/recipes and make menus for the next 2 weeks...and purge the "yucky" foods from our pantry.

Kim - sorry I am just now answering, I took a break from threads, mostly because I just can't seem to find time to get on the internet (outside of research) and if I am on here I want to be on the TTC thread, and well I need a break from thinking about it. But here is a quote about ovarian drilling....

quote:

Ovarian drilling, done during laparoscopy, is a procedure in which a laser fibre or electrosurgical needle punctures the ovary 4 to 10 times. This treatment results in a dramatic lowering of male hormones within days and is often performed in women who have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Studies have shown that up to 80 percent of patients will benefit from such treatment. Many women who fail to ovulate with clomiphene or Metformin therapy will respond when these medications are reintroduced to the system after ovarian drilling. Side effects are rare, but may result in adhesion formation or ovarian failure if there are complications during the procedure.

Ryanne - that is what I am hoping will happen for me. Surely if they take out the endometriosis and do the ovarian drilling I should be able to get pregnant...Lord willing

I just wanted to say a lot of women are told there's nothing wrong other than bad genetics, but they actually have PCOS. I'm convinced that my mother has it and so do I to a lesser degree. What was mentioned above is correct. A lot of women have perfect fertility and regular periods, but still have the disease. There is a really good website/message board that has lots of useful information. If you pm me, I can give you the link.

Soulcysters.net is an awesome PCOS message board, I was/am a member although I no longer post.

So... modified carb intake isn't working for me and I think I need to go on strict Atkins in order to lose the rest of my pregnancy weight plus the 15 lbs to get back to my "ideal" weight of 135. DH has agreed to do it with me, or at least to not eat carby foods in the house. Now if I can just convince myself that it's ok to throw out the chocolate ice cream

I thought it was against TOS to link to another website. The board is soulcysters.net. I just joined.

I can never figure it out myself but as far as I know, to post a link in a thread like this is pretty much fine. Ryanne posted the same board anyhow ~ and it's been posted in other threads (like the one for those who've had a hysterectomy). (Actually ladioffaith mentioned them in her post #31 ~ and she's a mod )

Only a couple weeks, lol. Usually by this point I'm seeing some results, especially in the weight loss area. I think if I start taking my Cinnamon or Fenugreek it will help.

I also need to have my thyroid levels tested at my next post partum appointment...

Really dumb question, but humor me please, or point me in the right direction to find "help". I know I need to cut back on carbs, I cant do NO carb since everything has carbs. But what is good guideline for "low carb". I see all these numbers and I dont know how many grams are "recommended" etc. Can anyone tell me guideline you use? How much is too much?
