I can't remember his name right now, but the bass vocalist for Chosen Few is the lowest I have heard.
On the song "If You're Still Thirsty" (from "The Little Things" recording), he just about knocks the bottom out of it.

So who hit 7hz?

No one, as far as I know. The current record is 8, so I presume someone would have to reach 7 to go "on record."

Just decided to make my voice better. Will start taking vocal lessons in August. :-)

I was just in Branson a few weeks ago and saw the Pierce Arrow show, both Dan Britton and Tim Storms sang that night. At the show they say that Tim Storms holds the Guiness Book of World Records as the lowest bass singer and that the note he hit to take the record was 15 keys below the piano keyboard register. The night i was there he hit some pretty low notes but none that were any lower than many of the current SG basses I've heard and I was sitting right on the second row center right in front of the center PA speaker. Mr Storms had a pleasant enough tone and they claim he has a 6 octave range, he did sing some higher notes and sang lead on one song that was not a bass lead and sounded okay. I do recommend the Pierce Arrow show though it is one of the best ones I've seen in Branson and I've been going there for 40 plus years. They feature a lot of gospel music in their performances and did a very neat Imperials medley the night I ws there. Casey Ellison who used to sing tenor with Chosen Few is also part of the group, Kim Boyce is there as well and former Jeff & Sheri Easter/ McGruders drummer Jared Daughtery (I may have the last name spelled incorrectly) is the comedian on the show and is flat out hilarious.

This is kind of off topic, but I am new here, and I can sing some pretty low notes. Any suggestions on how to extend my range any lower? My lowest note is a D2, I think. I would love to see if I can go any lower (J.D. Sumner is my hero, has been for years.) Any suggestions on the correct vocal fry technique?

Any feedback is much appreciated!!!

Oh, and is there a difference between vocal fry and growling? If there is, are there proper techniques for both?

Guinness World Book shows Tim Storm as holding the world record for the lowest bass voice. Tim sings in Branson, MO at a theater there. He also holds Guinness's record as the widest vocal range. He obtained this record in 2002. I think that was after JD held the record for a while.

Tim Storms may have the records, but who wants to hear him? Not a pleasant voice IMO.

BTW, the bass for Chosen Few was originally Jody Medford, but quickly changed to Scott Fraker. Scott is one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. He is doing some evangelistic work now. He goes to church with some of my family in Springfield, MO.

Pardon, but what is the proper technique for vocal fry? How do you train your voice to extend your range, and get better tone? I can hit F1 and G1 pretty well, but I'd like to find a proper technique. I can only hit those notes by frying them (I think). I'd really like to train down to a C1 or lower. Any info would be much appreciated, because I'm new to these forums.

The only keyboard you can go 15 notes off of is my 3 years olds, and it only has 8 keys. That is such a fabrication. And most of these people who claim to have 6 octaves only has one that you would want to listen to. QUALITY NOT QUANTITY!!!!!!!

I would say a close tie between David Hester and Aaron McCune.

I believe now that the lowest singing bass is Alexander Ort from Russia.

He is known to sing as low as Eb1 in full voice (without a microphone).

Unfortutately there are few recordings with him singing, he usually sings live. There's a sample of his speaking voice:

Southern Gospel has a couple who go lower. Mike Holcomb, who sings a C0 pretty much every night. (I think I didn't mess that up.)

JD said Mike Holcomb and Cecil Stringer were the lowest after him....
That's a pretty STRONG endorsement.

C0 is 16 Hz. I guess you've meant C1.

Does Mike sing that C1 without a mic, in full voice, filling all the room?

If so, then he is really the lowest, respects to him!

Sorry, yes, I meant C1.

Mike does use a microphone, but from every indication I've seen, he'd be quite audible without it. It's not a soft or raspy vibration--he's got some oopmh to it. He's been singing C1 since the early 70s, so he's had a good deal of time to work on it!

Is that close to OOMPH ?

I have never heard of Dan Britton. I find the "ultra" low down bass singers quite fasinating. There is this new quartet called "Spoken 4" out of Branson. They have a bass singer by the name of Cecil Stringer. Never heard of him until recently. If you get a chance to pick up their live concert CD, check out their version of "Beautiful Life". This bass dude hits a note so low that it should be against the laws of God and man.

I think it's a double low C. Whatever it is, it's astonishing.

I absolutely LOVE bass singers.... even the good ones are good IMO!

I found this thread just doing google searches for different bass singers.

Not sure if everyone has heard the Greater Vision CD 'Quartets' or not, but it's a GREAT CD for comparing different bass singers.

IMO, Tim Riley is the best their ever was... soooooooooooooo low but yet sooooooooo smooth and without any kind of effort.

Check out http://youtube.com/watch?v=87rbegDpHxk IMPRESSIVE indeed... even Mark Lowry and David Phelps look impressed.....

Currently the lowest out their would have to be McCune and Duncan.... incredible singers.

QJ

I love hearing base singers. What is that low note Tim sings in this video?

Wow, finally read through the whole post, takes longer when you stop to listen to likes :) Nobody said anything about Brock Speer. I like his base voice also.
