I hope so! And maybe after I get fitted I can order shoes online without having to drive so far. I've heard it's good to have two pairs of shoes in the winter--in case one gets wet or something--but I can't afford two pair right now. Maybe one now and one for Christmas.

Yeah I have one pair, will get two after I have been consistent about it. I didn't really track the miles on this pair but I got them in June.

I will get another pair in january/february and rotate them out. I saw asics 20.00 cheaper at Dick's Sporting Goods than the running pair. So once you know which pair you need, you can find the best place to get them in stores or online.

Kohl's and some other stores also started carrying the most popular running shoes on their website for less as well.

supposedly you can put newspaper in your shoes and they will dry faster.

LOL. Ya, everyone convinced me....treadmill running can be done. It wasn't as hard to get back into it. To keep my mind occupied for 40+ minutes I had the TV on (muted) and also listened to music. So I had somewhere to look and something to listen to.heh.

I know that feeling! I started running again last October after not running for a year. Before that time, I ran a lot but then I got mono and it was hard to get back into running, I tried and then I stopped running for a year cold turkey. I mean, no exercise at all for a year! And then last October I got the itch to run and so it was a shock to see how out of shape I was. I didn't gain weight or anything, I was thin but out of shape.

I started running the treadmill first. I couldn't run more than 10 or 15 minutes at a time and the most I could do was like 1.5 miles. I had to start out running 5.3-5.5 and that made me out of breath. But slowly, I was able to run faster and longer at a time. I did the whole walk-run thing too. I was so frustrated with myself because in the past I used to be able to run the treadmill at 7.2 and keep on going.LOL. Nothing worse than an ex-runner trying to run again and it's frustrating when you know you can do better but your body won't let you!

So even when it gets tough and you think to yourself you'll never feel better, that running will always be a chore and horrible and painful, don't give up. It may take a while. It took me a while to see results. But it's worth it because now I can run 30-45 minutes at a time and go up to 5 miles (that's usually my mileage limit, I've never gone past that though I do wonder how far I could go....).

And I think it's good to change it up too. Don't just run on the treadmill, but go outside and brave the weather every now and then. Wind resistance and hills will help build your leg muscles and make it easier to run the treadmill, but running the treadmill at a set pace will help you run faster when you go outside. If you get too used to one or the other, your body gets used to it and you have to up the intensity after a while.

Anyways, goals are good. When you have an idea what to aim for it helps to keep you motivated! Happy running!

I got mono about 3 years ago. I have not had the energy I had before that since. :( I have gained weight, so that makes it harder to run too. So I have to cut myself some slack.

I am only 5'1" so 6.0 or higher is pretty fast for me. :)

Oh and I agree. Don't buy cheap shoes.

You still don't have much energy? Wow, that was a long time since you had mono. It took me a long time to fully recover from it. It was hard to get people to believe I was actually sick. No coughing, runny nose, achy pains, etc to show that I was "sick". All I could say was "I had no energy" and everyone has had no energy at some point, so it was hard convincing people yes I was sick!lol I was still in college when I got mono and I skipped a lot of my classes that year because I couldn't stay awake and focused in class! It was horrible, I felt half-dead for months.

I never had mono thank goodness but I was real tired for a few months (meant go home and sleep for a few hours every day) and now I seem to be better

I went to the gym. Brr it was hard to even get in the car. I think I did a 20 something minute run, my shoe got untied so I had to walk for a minute or two. Walked the rest for 3.22 miles in 60 min

I've never calculated my pace but I run a little under a 9 minute (plus or minus) mile and a 18.5-19 minute 2 mile. When I did my police agility testing a week and a half ago I ran the mile and half in 13:48. I could have run it a little faster but I was tired from the prior tests and I had done well enough on the other tests that I only had to pass the run with the minimum time to get enough points to pass the testing. Basically, I didn't have to run it really fast and I didn't want to so I didn't....

Today I ran a very slow mile (10:25). It snowed last night so it was a little slick and I didn't want to kill myself! It's also day 6 of running so I figured a lighter day was ok!

We have a new running store in the area that I need to check out. I do need to get some new shoes sometime - but it will probably be after Christmas before I do...

I've gained some weight too and it is amazing how BIG a difference just five pounds can make!! I know I could increase my speed if I could get some weight off! I'm only 5'1 too, so I hear you on the whole speed thing. So I guess we have the double challenge: short legs=slower time AND short=easier to gain weight..(That is my excuse anyway!! Yeah, because it couldn't possibly be all the ice cream I inhale!! )

I just happened to come by this thread and read some of the posts. All of you runners make me long for the days that my knees allowed me to run. Running for me began long before it was popular. I had run cross- country in high school to get in shape for wrestling and never really enjoyed running. During college in 1970 I was getting out of shape and began running again. I found that running provided a great way to relieve the stress of school and later a high stress job. It also allowed me to eat anything I wanted and maintain my weight.

For 30 yrs I ran nearly everyday in all weather, even when I worked long hours. I was a mid distance runner, usually 2-4 miles daily, and being a type A personality competed against myself. When I started I was running a 6-7 minute mile pace, and as the years passed and my knee worsened as a result of surgeries for an old wrestling injury, my times gradually increased. I finally had to switch to biking instead of running 6 yrs ago. Every time I see a runner I wish that I could do the same.

Even though running played a part in my arthritic knee, it also probably saved my life. Two years ago I required a quintuple bypass for coronary artery blockage. Just 3 months earlier I had a totally negative stress test and was told that my cardio-respiratory condition was above average for a 20 y/o at the age of 56. When I suddenly developed chest pain while exercising I was found to have 5 severe coronary artery blockages (family history of heart disease) and required emergency surgery. If not for my yrs of exercising I likely would not have had adequate collateral circulation to the heart which prevented a fatal heart attack. My yrs of running did not prevent the coronary artery disease, but it kept me alive and has allowed me to recover completely. I encourage you all to continue a most rewarding exercise.

I'm sorry you can't run anymore! I know I would be very unhappy if I couldn't. I have some minor knee issues and I no longer run on cement; EVER. I also take glucosamine(sp?) daily. It has helped quite a bit.

One of my regular prayers is that my knees (or any other part) never give out so that I can no longer run. I suffer from depression and it is my way of coping with that because I don't want to take medicine for it.

But, if ever I get to a place where I can no longer run, I will do exactly what you have done and find something I can do. Biking can be tough, it uses different muscles.

I'm glad your running helped you!

I've very disappointed today because I discovered the running store I was going to go to has closed. So now I'm out of luck with getting fitted. Closest one I can find now is four hours away.

Stellaluna,

Do you have any athletic shoe stores that you could go to (like at a mall, even)? I buy my running shoes at Dick's Sporting Goods store, but any place that has a decent selection should be able to help you. The most important thing is being able to try them on and walk around to see how they feel.

Yeah I just got a coupon for 20% off any athletic shoe over 65 or 69.99? from there...It was in the scorecard rewards brochure they just sent out with Lance Armstrong on the cover.

See thats funny because the one I go to was a Galyans and it was bought by them, and they never put the track in, so when I went to one of the newer ones, I was like, what is this... oh that's pretty cool

I have no idea what my pace is either. The best I've ever run was a 7 minute pace. I'm anywhere from 8 to 9 1/2 minutes, depending on how I feel during a run cuz, you know, some days you run great and other days you feel horrible!

Anyways, I almost made the excuse yesterday evening not to run outside. I didn't feel like torturing myself on the treadmill again (haha) so I went out right when the sun was setting so it wasn't completely dark when I finished my run, although I brought a small keychain flashlight with me. I had lots of energy yesterday. Sometimes I wish I could gauge how much energy I have so I'd know before I go for a run whether it'll be a good run or a bad run. I really hate the bad ones, you know how it is, the entire run doesn't get better but seems to get worse and everything is going bad to worse.LOL.

Like Miss Giggles, I also envy your Dick's store Calea. The one where I live used to be a Galyan's too so there is no track inside to test your shoes out (but they do have a rock climbing wall, which I've never tried). I suppose if I wanted to, I could go find a treadmill to test them out, but I'd feel weird walking to the front of the store in new shoes (the shoes are in the back of the store) just to try them out so I usually just run around the shoe area.

Well, closest I can figure I need a stability shoe. So I checked out Runner's World and got a list of the stability shoes with the highest ratings. I'm going to go to Lady Footlocker tonight and try some on. I tried to get shoes there before, but the girl helping me was less than helpful so I left. That's the only store we have with a decent selection of women's running shoes. No Dick's or anything like that.

It was snowing this morning but I decided to run anyway - there was only a dusting on the ground. It was awesome running with the snow gently falling! The only bummer was I think I'm going to have to re-measure the distance I had marked out (I did a different route today since it was light when I ran). I thought it was a 2 mile run but either I was running at a faster pace than I thought, or it really wasn't 2 miles... Oh well, it still felt good!
