I've recently taken an interest in making beaded jewelry. I've only done one necklace (from a kit), but really enjoyed it an have purchased some tools and more beads. I would love to hear from any one who does/has done this before. I would love some tips and good resources to learn more about it.

I have done beading but have also done it from a kit so it's not like I know much, apart from stringing the beads and deciding which colours and patterns you want. I did macrame' for a while and really enjoyed that and used beads for that. That was really good fun. I have also used beads for clothing. I made my own belly dancing outfit when I was younger. It took me 7 days and nights to do the whole skirt and top but it was beautiful!

I've done a little bit of crochet beading--necklace, bracelets (2), earrings (3 pairs). Some were mostly beads, others were mostly crochet or tatted with bead accents.

Don't really know where to go for stuff, I usually buy from a local bead shop or craft store.

Not sure if you saw this. It has some pretty designs . You could always just experiment and make your own designs once you get proficient.

I love to bead jewelry. I have made special necklaces and bracelets for Christmas and birthdays. As soon as I have 50 posts, I'll upload a picture of them!

I am going to learn how to bead jewelry for the dolls that I make, so far I haven't gotten that far. But I do look forward to it.

I'm really getting into making jewelry too. I hope that my DDs and I can sell at some craft shows this summer. It would be a great way to make some extra money. We have to build up an inventory, though, before we can even enter a show. I didn't realize how much I'd have to spend for all the supplies in order to do that, but we could make it back in one show (I've discussed this with a craft show veteran to get some inside scoop).

I have found some good suppliers online - artbeads.com, firemountaingems.com...monsterslayer.com seems to be the best priced source for gold and silver (and filled) chains and wire. I also frequently shop the clearance items at local craft supply stores.

I'm hoping to make some necklaces for the church to use at a missions fundraiser. I've already sketched out the designs and am working on trying them out in copper wire and inexpensive beads (sort of like trying a clothing design in muslin before cutting into the more expensive fabric).

I take inspiration for my bead jewelry from posts on Craftster and Etsy, projects on Michaels.com and JoAnn.com and the free project sheets offered in the stores, magazines, and jewelry-making books.

Mags I read:
Bead Style
Bead & Button
Bead Unique
Beadwork
Stringing
Creative Jewelry
(single issue per year)

The books and mags have instructions and tips about beading and jewelry making that I have found to be highly helpful -- for example, how to open and close jump rings and how to use head pins and eye pins (esp. the part about making a loop at the top).

I also observe the costume jewelry I see in stores. (Many times I discover that I can make something similar, so it's a waste of money to buy what they're selling. I now try to buy only jewelry I don't know how to make or am unwilling to take the time to make.) I get inspiration from those, and making these observations helps me keep up with trends so that I know what's more likely to sell. (I've done a booth at the craft fair we have at work. I'm planning to do it again this year.)

I make earrings. I sell them at craft fairs and at a art gallery in my town. I found earrings to be easy. I also make ear cuffs. I don't make the cuffs, I get them at Fire Mountain Gems and then I hang beads from them. I also make luv beads. That is stretchy chord, and I buy the best kind, that I string beads on and them just knot it at the end. I then put Aileens clear glue over the knit and let it dry. Sometimes I give it 2 coats. I call them luv beads because you can wear them as a necklace or bracelet. My aunt has MS and I am going to make her a bracelet. A stretchy one is easy for her to put on. She can't do clasps.

I love beads because they are so colorful. I am a colorful person if you ever see what I wear. I use seed beads and beads up to 6mm. I have some cane beads but they are so big it's hard to put them on something without spacer beads. By big I mean they have big holes in them. I have to see how to do it. I bought the beads because they were so pretty. I also have some Swawarski Crystal beads which I love too. They sparkle in the sun and my preschoolers love to see the beads sparkle. Last but not least are lampwork beads. I buy mine at Oriental Trading because they have pretty ones. They may not have a lot of real findings, silver or gold, like head and eye pins but what they have is very reasonable. Check them out.

Thanks for the links. I bookmarked some of them.

I want to learn to do clasps. Then I can make some of both and people can decide if they want luv beads or something with a clasp. I'm not good with kits because I am not good with directions unless they are totally spelled out for me. If I have trouble with something, who will help me? That's why I do stuff on my own.

Good luck with what you are doing.

Fire-polished beads are very similar to the crystals, and sometimes less expensive. But Swarovski seems to be faster on the color trends than other brands.

I don't know about the other beads you are talking about as I don't have any of those but the Swarovski crystals really sparkle in the son. I will be wearing a bracelet in the car and the son will hit it and it will sparkle all over the car! If I wear anything to school, the kids are smazed how much they sparkle. Anything that sparkles like that is alright in my book!

Look on most major beading supplier web sites, under "glass beads" for fire-polished beads. Usually they are Czech, sometimes they are from China. They are faceted like the Swarovski crystals and usually very sparkly and reflective like them as well. Our local bead store sells them on about a 6 to 8 inch string for about $3.00 (roughly about 1/2 the price of the same amount of Swarovski). At Michaels, for example, the long strands of beads that look somewhat like Swarovski will be fire-polished glass.

Our downtown has been in revitalization for 10 years and we are no where near ready. They talk and talk and get people to do maps and things but nothing gets down. My niece's dance school is in our town and they have a dance shop. I was in there today and saw that they had knitted scarfs. Hey, I make jewelry, greeting cards, stamped tees and purses. I wonder.... So I asked and she said sure, to bring some of my stuff down. She says she is trying to diversify and sell more than dance stuff because not everyone in town is a dancer. She also said the mom's wait around for their kids and look in the dance shop and if they see something they like, they will buy it. Thurs. is when I will be going down with my stuff. Let's hope I sell something. I made 6 pairs of earrings a few days ago so guess where they are going?

My cousin just got a new job and the hairdresser she works for sells wigs and prom dresses too. She says she is going to ask him if he will put my earrings in the store. She also says she knows of a show that I can do and sell my stuff at the end of March, beginning of April. I am going to be very busy right now. I also just ordered some jewelry things from Fire Mountain Gems because they were having a huge sale, some things being 89 cents for 100 head pins or 69 cents for something. I only spent about 20 something dollars and $5 and change shipping. Now I will have enough to make earrings for everyone!
