Thank you ladies. I just wanted to confirm my instincts! For a few days I was really engorged between feedings, but I don't seem to be so much anymore. Is that normal? Because she's feeding so often maybe?

Sounds normal to me, Christine. Feed her when she's hungry, and your body will work everything out with the baby. Some women have supply problems, but as long as she's satisfied, making plenty of wet and dirty diapers, then there's no use in borrowing trouble.

Thanks. That's what I figure. I don't know how many wet diapers she has ... every time we change her (nearly every feeding) it's a poopy diaper.

I remember those days, eat eat eat eat eat and then eat some more. I had a hard time at first knowing the difference between her needing to eat and needing to suckle. It took a bit to feel the difference in her suck. Now I have a little one who refuses to sign when she wants milk, she just has a complete meltdown but yesterday she did lift my shirt up mid meltdown so that helped. She wants to eat when I'm not expecting her to, I'm not denying her at all, it's just not on the 'normal schedule'. **Throwing the idea of a schedule out the window right now**

OK ... another question. She's sleeping for longer stints at night (like 5-6 hours). Consequently, my breasts are getting REALLY engorged. So much so that if I sleep anyway but on my back, I leak all over the place. Completely through the pads in my bra and a couple times all over the sheets. Any suggestions???????

It'll calm down in a couple of weeks. I just slept on a towel for awhile, it was easier to swap it out then to have to change the sheets.

I was contemplating that. I'm going through new PJs every night. I hate doing this much laundry.

You could just sleep without a shirt on :p I actually hated doing that because it made everything feel more wet when I leaked.

Oh I leak then too. And I have issues sleeping without a shirt on. It just feels weird. I did that though, in the hospital. It was easier then trying to take the gown off every 2 hours with my IV on and everything. I just gave up caring.

I put a pee pad down under the sheet, towel on sheet and doubled my nursing pads at night. It will calm down!! I also used a hand pump for less than a minute at night when she switched to 5-6 hr stretches. It relieved just enough pressure and didn't make affect my supply.

Ok, I plan to breastfeed. What pumps have you used and would recommend? I'm so new to all of this, I have no idea what will work best or what not to waste money on.

Are you planning on pumping full time while working, or just occasionally?

You could schedule a time every day to pump so that Ray can have a bottle. My personal opinion is that it's really unnecessary...for us anyway it was. I pumped with Hannah so Joel could 'help out' and it was waaaay more hassle than it was worth since I couldn't sleep while he was feeding her anyway. With Jael I just fed her when she wanted it, Joel never 'helped' with that part and I got *more* sleep than I did in the beginning with Hannah. It was easier emotionally as well since I wasn't expecting him to do that. He helped with Hannah's transition and I just dealt with the baby's needs. Plus pumping is messy and you've got to do it after a feeding to build up an 'extra' supply by tricking your body that you need more at that certain time of day every day. Time in the beginning when you're tired and should be napping and not sitting in a chair strapped to a pump with a baby not snuggling with you. But that's just my experience...

You could really go either way then, buy a nice Medela PIS or one that just does one side at a time. Pumping for one feeding a day should be a piece of cake, you can work on the scheduling of it when that time gets here

Sharon I have the Medela swing, it's a one sider. It was easy to use after feeding to help get a few bottles worth tucked into the freezer. My little one hated to nurse in public after about 4-5 months, it was soo much better to look around. I had to get her used to a bottle or never leave the house anywhere near a feeding time. That wasn't realistic for my need to get out for human interactions. I will say.. I wouldn't pump if the only reason is to let Ray give a bottle. There truly are other ways for him to bond. If however it is something you want to do regardless of who feeds the baby that bottle then that's different. I do think it's 'smart' to have the baby learn to take a bottle even if for the 'just in case' scenario of you being away unexpectedly or simply for being able to PLAN on being away, say for a movie or dinner out and you can leave a bottle. In that case you do want to figure out how to pump :) I started with a hand pump but once we ran into the public nursing issue I got the Swing and loved it. Ryanne is right tho, tackle that mountain when you get closer to the end of pregnancy or start with the Medela Swing in your registry. Unless you have oodles of money or will need to pump more than once a day the Swing should do fine.

I have the Medela Pump in Style Advanced and it is wonderful, but I pump about 20 oz a day. You probably don't need/want something that fancy. It's fast though... I get 10 oz in less than 15 minutes. If it took longer than that, and I wasn't pumping out of necessity, I don't think it would be worth the effort (for me) because I can nurse the baby faster than I would be pumping.

I think alot of that is luck though, I could have pumped for 20 minutes and only gotten 4oz, lol. And that was when I was engorged
