It didn't start here until about 2pm but was melting, I'd guess about 4 PM it started to stick. We're at 2 inches and heading to 3... should make that as it's suppose to keep going until near midnight. Kind of fun, but I'm sooooo ready for Spring.

Talking about garage...

I am thinking of changing the oil, but it is cold out there...

Plus, I look at the 5 quarts + filter & getting all frozen and make a mess and I am thinking ... there is no way I can get it under $20, and top off all the other liquids.

What do you think? Am I too lazy, and should just do it myself?

No, I don't think it's lazy necessarily. And for the price, it is tempting. But I'm very reluctant to let anyone else work on my vehicle.

A friend of mine took is truck to a GM dealership to have the oil changed. On his way home, it started spewing oil. When they pulled the old oil filter off, the filter gasket stuck to the engine block and they didn't notice. So when they put the new filter on, there were two gaskets instead of one.

I don't change my own oil. By time I buy all the stuff at retail prices, Iv'e spent the $30 that a shop would charge to do the oil plus check the tires and other fluids. And that doesn't count the cost of my time to drive around getting the oil, filters, band aids, antibiotic...
When younger and broke I used to work on my own cars. Not that it's difficult, but the right tools are necessary... and expensive. Now later in my career, my time is better spent on doing what I do to make a living, and let the mechanic do what he does to keep me on the road to make more $$$$

I actually enjoy doing it myself most of the time...especially when it isn't below zero out. The garage can be heated with a portable kerosene heater. Even so, laying on your back on cold hard cement doesn't last long.

And I have a good selection of tools that have taken a lifetime to accumulate. Now I'm starting to get old and am less willing to do more and more things myself. If anything major comes along, it's going to the local mechanic because I don't want to have to deal with it anymore.

Yeap, there certainly is that aspect too. It's amazing how I used to go camping and would sleep on the tent floor without a mat. Now I have to carry an air bed, else I wouldn't be able to move in the AM. Most of the camping out I'm willing to do now is building a fire in the back yard, and sneak back in at midnight to sleep in my own bed.

Our tent camping days were over decades ago.

Now we have a travel trailer that's very comfortable.

I live in Monroe.

Some friends of mine used to work at the Midland Nuclear Power Plant back when the building was sinking into the ground.

I'm seriously thinking about building a "Car pit" in the garage of the next house I build just for the reasons of doing under-body work. Not sure a lift or the pit would be more cost effective.

Check your local codes. In my county a pit in a detached garage would be fine, buy you can't put a pit in the garage attached to the house... environmental, code, and safety issues.

As far as cost, I don't know, would have to crunch the numbers. However, I've think the site development, environmental stuff, and pouring the foundation walls isn't going to be cheap. You may do better building a detached garage with 14 foot ceiling height and a lift. That also could be more appealing in the market as there's more utility, like RV garage storage, so resell could be better than a garage with an 9 foot ceiling and a pit.

Nowadays having a drain in the garage is a big no-no too depending on local codes. Didn't used to be that way, but I'm betting some people just used it as an oil drain.

Yeah probably. There was a time when we really didn't comprehend or consider the damage such things could do to the environment. I mean if you think about it, we really didn't know... it wasn't too long ago that if you got a chest cold, you smoked cigarettes to help you breath and flush it out.

My counselor said a few months ago that I needed to do whatever I could to reduce stress. Now I find myself on a slope that I kinda wish I had not been on at all.

Hi guys! I'm new to the garage. I don't have a garage to work in. We had a tear down party about five years ago. About five of us with a couple of ropes pulled and yanked on it til it finally came down. Had to tear it down before the city inspector got to me.

I haven't had the money to build a new one yet. I'm out here in the mid west, right near the shores of Lake Erie, in Cleveland, Oh. We've had a lot of snow recently and are supposed to get some more yet this week.

With all the snow Washinton D.C. got Obama could have sold truck loads of snow to the Canadians for the Vancover Olympics. Could have made a lot of money in it.

That's all for now!

Hello and welcome.

At least you've got a garage thread to hang out in.

And glad to hear from a Lake Erie neighbor.

A few years ago, we had a back basement entryway of the church that was in dis-repair and needed to be torn down and rebuilt. We hired someone to build the new one, but decided to tear down the old one ourselves. So me and a buddy hooked up a strap to the frame and pulled it down with the pickup. It was a lot of fun until we found the wasp nest.
