I am 23 and single, and God has been confirming a call to be a pastor for the last three years. Recently he has directed my heart to go to school. I have my reservations about this decision, but I shall follow God wherever he leads me. I would appreciate advice concerning loans and financial aspects, as well as schools and appropriate programs that would effectively train me up to serve God and His people as a minister of his Word. Thank You

It's probably wise to try to be financially stable while at school, rather than winding up with a lot of debt. What kind of work do you do now? What you might do is find out Bible Colleges or Seminaries are nearby to you. Find out what denomination(s) (if any) those are associated with, and then check into the doctrinal statements of the denomination as a whole. In general, you can probably expect a seminary to be slightly more 'progressive' and ecumenical than the main part of the denomination in question... but not to the point of being outside of the core doctrines. Bible Colleges are for bachelor's level degrees, requiring only high school. Seminaries are for master's degrees, and usually you need a bachelor's of something (anything will usually do) to qualify as a student. Some Christian Colleges or Universities that offer a variety of programs offer Bible and Ministry programs too -- that's similar to what I mean by Bible College, except in a larger setting. If you want to go eleswhere, see if you can live & eat on campus, and whether that is cost-effective compared to renting and cooking. Also consider places where you could 'rent' from family or friends. Most of all, pray, of course! Most of these schools are good schools -- but there just might be a 'best' one for you out there.

Line cooking is a great skill for being in school! There are restaurants everywhere, and it's probably pretty easy to blanket a town and find an opening or two. You could work part time and cover your living expenses, then pick up extra work in the summer (extra shifts, a second job or maybe wedding catering) to make a dent in your tuition. Then, if you get a loan for the remainder of the tuition, it won't be as big as it could be... and there are always scholarships. You might just break even! Good things about a job like that: (1) they would probably want you evenings more than days, (2) it's not exactly intellectual work (not that it doesn't take thought and skill, just that it's a different sort of thing than school-type thinking). (3) The pay is better than working fast food, pumping gas, or low-end retail work. Be sure to work your heart out (full time or more) for the months between now and September. Save as much as humanly possible. Just say no to self-indulgence. Every dollar you have up front before you enter school is going to be worth its weight in gold, so see if you can save enough to pay 100% of tuition-and-books for your 1st and 2nd semesters, plus 1 month of living expenses so that you have time to find a job if you are moving to a new place (and maybe extra savings to buy a laptop). Hop over to the finances forum, and people will give you lots of advice for living cheaply. (As a line cook, do they let you take / eat leftovers or ingredients that are not good enough to serve?)

You could probably find a church to work at during your schooling.

Being a line cook would probably pay better... and volunteers at Churches have a lot more freedom to try various ministry options, to grow, try, fail, and change. It would be hard, at least in first year, to try and get hired (not having experience or education yet), and then try and arrange life, school and personal ministry around that. However, once you have some of your education under your belt, and a good idea of your area of gifting and where that fits into formal ministries, then ministry as paid work becomes a better option.

Our church hires a "small army" of interns each year...to provide them with not only funds to help pay for school, but "real life" experience in the ministry WHILE in school. They work in all different areas of the church...depending on the church needs, and the specific interests of the students.

Non denominational can be anywhere on the map, doctrinally speaking. You need to sit down and write out what you believe and do not believe and what you are undecided on. The theology folders will be a good start for the various topics. I also belive there are on-line surveys that will tell you where your beliefs lay. Then select a school that mirrors your own belief structure.

When we were in Springfield, MO there were seminary students working as janitors at our church. There are like 3 or 4 seminaries there. The Assembly of God have their headquarters there. One is a Bible Baptist seminary.
